Description

Wrist bands are those little bracelets made out of paper, plastic, vinyl, Tyvek, leather or rubber that are used to provide some type of information about the wearer. Everyone who has ever been a patient in a hospital is familiar with the “hospital bracelet” that is a requirement for every patient to identify who they are. It is a very simple method designed to prevent accidentally giving a patient the wrong treatment or medication. However, hospitals are not the only businesses that use wristbands. Many individuals and other types of organizations find these simple items extremely useful as well. Many people in the entertainment industry believe that wristbands are an event planner’s best friend since they are an inexpensive way to identify the people attending the event which can eliminate many potential problems. Wristbands can also be used for a variety of other reasons.

Common Uses for Wristbands

Let’s look at some of the common uses for wristbands.

Age Identification- night clubs and other business that serve alcoholic beverages that allow underage people to attend concerts, parties and celebrity appearances frequently use different color wristbands that don’t stretch, are waterproof and can only be removed by cutting them in half to identify people who are of legal drinking age and therefore are allowed to purchase alcoholic beverages. This practice allows everyone to enjoy the event. Without the wristbands, either underage people would not be allowed to attend or no alcoholic beverages could be sold.

Height Restrictions- wristbands are used in amusement parks, carnival and county fairs because many amusement rides have height restrictions for safety reasons because the seat belts and other restraints will not work properly for people under a specific height. If the person’s height is in question, the individual is measured when the enter the park by standing next to a ruler and if they meet the height requirements, they must wear a colored wristband that doesn’t stretch, is waterproof and can only be removed by cutting it in half to tell the ride operators that it’s OK to let this individual on the ride.

Admissions - Many business and events that charge an admission fee or are available only to invited guests use wristbands to identify people who have paid the admission price or had a valid invitation to the event. This eliminates the need for employees to check ticket stubs to make sure people are allowed to participate. If an event is held on several days, different colors with the date printed on them can be used to make sure the individual is allowed to attend that day’s events.

Child Protection- wristbands are an excellent way to protect children going on field trips with their school, day care center or youth group. It’s a good way to do an easy head count and make sure the children get on the right buses for their group so that no one gets left behind. Some wristbands have a pouch in them where a sheet of paper can be inserted to provide the child’s name, any allergies or medical problems and a emergency number to contact the parent’s in case of an accident. This kind of wrist band was developed at the request of an emergency worker’s organization after a serious school bus accident left the police, emergency workers and hospitals with no way to identify the injured children because the adults accompanying were critically injured.

Parent Child Identification- this type of wrist band is printed in pairs and designed for a single use with an identification number on both of the wristbands. These are frequently used by day care centers, some elementary schools, churches and other organizations to guarantee that any adult other than one of the child’s parents has a matching wristband before they are allowed to pick up the child. The parent puts one of the wristbands on their child and then gives the other matching wristband to the adult who will be picking them up.

Commemoration - just as arm bands can be used for commemorating certain events, some people use wristbands for the same purpose. An anti-bullying campaign supported by celebrities Kelly Holmes, Joss Stone and Natasha Bedingfield that occurred recently used bright blue wristbands to show the wearer’s belief that bullying is wrong. It is an inexpensive way to make a statement.

Medical Uses- the traditional hospital bracelet is the perfect example of using wristbands for identifying patients. Many clinics, testing facilities and even some doctor’s offices use them as well under certain conditions. They are especially useful in emergency situations for both identification which is written on the wristband and using different colors for triage purposes to identify who is critical and needs to be seen immediately and who can wait for treatment.
